beauty doesn't have to come at the expense of your health...

At Valentia

We're passionate about doing the research and spreading the word so that you know exactly what your labels say and what you need to look out for when it comes to natural skincare that doesn't compromise the core of your health.

knowledge Is power

you should be able to

understand what's on the label of your skincare products in the same way you look for whole food ingredients on your food labels. It's easy to turn a blind eye when it comes to skincare because we often can't understand any of the labels.

We optimistically trust product packaging that makes incredible claims of clean ingredients derived from nature, yet even many "natural" and organic skincare lines harbor questionable ingredients that can negatively impact your skin and your health.

According to the CDC, phthalates are a group of chemicals used to make plastics more flexible and harder to break, and some forms are used as solvents (dissolving agents), often in cosmetic and skincare fragrances. Exposure to phthalates has been clinically shown to have negative hormonal effects in both men and women. Examples include dibutyl phthalate, diisononyl phthalate, and di-n-octyl phthalate.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, parabens are a family of related chemicals that are commonly used as preservatives in cosmetic products to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and mold. The problem is that certain forms of parabens have been shown to have estrogen-like effects in the body, which is a concern because high estrogen levels have been linked to several forms of cancer. Common types of parabens include butylparaben, ethylparaben, and methylparaben

Silicones are a modern class of synthetic materials that are high-performance oligomers or polymers that can take a variety of physical forms, ranging from solids and water-thin liquids to semi-viscous pastes, greases, and oils. While silicones give products a slippery, silky texture and are water-resistant to "lock in" moisture, they can interfere with cell renewal, dehydrate the skin, and clog pores, which in turn can cause breakouts. Some common names of silicones are dimethicone, methicone, and trimethicone.

Sulfates are aggressive detergents made of sulfur-containing mineral salts. Sulfates are cleansing agents that lather while removing oil and dirt, but they also wash away the natural antimicrobial peptides, proteins, and water-proofing oils our microbiomes naturally create. Products containing sulfates can cause irritation to your eyes, skin, lungs, and mouth—especially with long-term use. Frequently-used sulfates include ammonium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, and sodium lauryl sulfate.
